Policies

Florida

We are working on legislation to build on the work in HB 7125 to establish a more complete automated sealing relief structure in the state, as well as expanding the kinds of records eligible for petition-based sealing relief.

HB 7125

Florida

Passed in 2019 which included some early steps toward automated record change for some very low-level records, but that relief is incomplete.

Amendment 4

Florida

We supported Amendment 4 providing for the restoration of voting rights to people with most felony convictions in Florida, which passed overwhelmingly on the ballot in 2018.

SB 288

Ohio

SB 288, a major criminal justice omnibus bill we are supporting this session includes a set of changes further expanding access to record sealing for a wider range of felony conviction records.

HB1

Ohio

We have supported efforts to expand access to Ohio’s petition-based record sealing in recent sessions including HB 1 in 2020 which expanded access and reduced waiting periods.

Michigan

We supported the Clean Slate effort in Michigan that resulted in legislation expanding and in some cases automating relief that passed at the end of 2020 and will be implemented this year.

AB 1070

California

(passed 2019) Establishing automated record clearance in CA for all misdemeanor convictions and infractions and all felony convictions that resulted in probation.

California

(active – passed Senate, on Assembly floor) would expand the scope of automated record clearance in AB 1076 to most felonies that resulted in jail and prison sentences and would make all felony conviction records eligible for petition-based ‘expungement’ relief via PC 1203.41 – today most convictions resulting in prison sentences are not even eligible for petition-based relief.

SB 1294

Arizona

(passed 2021): We supported this bill that would, for the first time, create a petition-based record-sealing remedy in the state. Previously, there was essentially no way for anyone to Note: This was our first year working in the state. There were a number of orgs working

Illinois

We have been exploring a policy approach to expand automated record sealing in Illinois for several years and are now actively working with the Clean Slate coalition on drafting legislation in the near future.

  • TimeDone and Californians for Safety and Justice (CSJ), will be hosting the annual TimeDone Day for TimeDone Members at the State Capitol on Wednesday, August 10, 2022, between 10 am and 3:30 pm. TimeDone Day is an event to shed light on the barriers that people with criminal convictions face in California and the pressing need for reform and economic mobility. TimeDone and their local and national partners will be sharing economic empowerment resources with individuals living with old convictions. TimeDone is a diverse national network of 70,000 members with chapters in 4 key regions of California (Southern CA, Bay Area, Central Valley, and Northern CA) that support the engagement and mobilization of our members.

  • TimeDone a program of Alliance for Safety and Justice (ASJ), will be hosting it’s first TimeDone Day on Saturday, August 27, 2022, between 11 am and 3 pm at Fredrick Douglas Community Center 15401 Miles Ave, Cleveland, OH 44128. The TimeDone Day is an event to shed a light on the barriers that people with criminal convictions face in Ohio, the pressing need for reform and move toward action plans centered on economic mobility. TimeDone and their local and national partners will be sharing economic empowerment resources with individuals living with old convictions. TimeDone is a diverse national network of 70,000 members nationwide.
